Outlook 2002 opens messages slowly

I have a number of computers that open messages in
outlook very slowly. Specifically, Outlook opens up and
works normally except for the fact that when you switch
to preview a message or when you open up a message, there
is a 2-10 second delay (exact delay depending on the
computer, even though all the hardware is very similar).
All these computers are running Windows XP, most SP1, all
different Service Pack levels of Office tried--no
change. What's more, all these computers are imaged and
have the same exact configuration as many computers which
do not have this problem. The only differences are user
settings, i.e. 1 or 2 random programs, mail, address
book, etc. Some are using Exchange, some POP3. All of
these computers have migrated email settings--some from
Exchange, some from pst's, some from Outlook Express, so
one presumes that's the difference between no/small/large
delay but dunno. I've thought for a while that address
book settings were probably the culprit, but I've found
no configuration of address book that I can think of
fixes the issue.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Maybe your virus scanner? AVG by Grisoft is sooooooooo slow. Norton is much
better...

Good thought, but I have already uninstalled the
antivirus software on a few machines to no effect.

Thanks again,

Matt
