Outlook 2002 offline performance

Our users regularly (2-3 times a week) see spikes of
extremely long wait time, e.g. 3 minutes, to open an
item. We have about 20 folders syncronized offline, with
about 138 GB of data. What can Outlook be doing on my top
of the line Pentium 4 screaming laptop that takes 3
minutes! Even twice a week! I can only assume it is
hanging somewhere. Mid-range (5-10 second) delays are
experienced daily.

If someone could give me a few hints as to possible
causes of this behavior I would be so grateful. Am I
correct in my suspicion that Outlook stores and accesses
its data in a very inefficient manner? If so, are there
any patches or optimization tools?

IIRC, the default upper limit for .pst AND .ost files is 2 gigs per. Are
you actually synching 132 GB of data or mb?
