Is there a way to determine the total number of messages
received or sent on a given date, short of counting each
item in the list?

You could group the items by a particular date field, such as Received, and
then the group header will show how many items are in that group.

I tried your suggestion but, since the "Received" field
includes a time stamp, it views each item in its own
group. I've made several attempts to customize the
date/time field with no luck.

Is there a way to create a field that only contains the
date in mm/dd/yyyy format?

Jocelyn, thank you for the quick reply.

The reason for my inquiry is as follows:

The user (I'm in tech support, by the way) wants to be
able to track how many emails she receives and sends on a
given day. She would like to see a message total in the
lower left corner like Outlook currently display as "xx
Items".

Would it be feasible to set up seven (7) subfolders in the
Inbox labeled Sunday through Saturday, then create Rules
to automatically route a message from the Inbox into one
of these seven folders based on the received day of the
week?

I investigated the Rules idea, but there doesn't appear to be a way to
select just a message received "today" as opposed to on a specific date or
within a specific date range. Another thing you might try would be to set
up a custom view in the Inbox and Sent Items folders for each day, if you
can get Outlook to recognize a day of the week such as Monday.

FWIW, if you think you might be able to upgrade to Outlook 2003, there is a
new "arrangement" feature which does exactly what you're looking for -- it
separates messages for "Today", "Yesterday", "Monday" (since today is
Wednesday :-) ), and so on for the whole 7 days, after which it will say
"Last week", etc. The group headers show the number of messages in each
group.

Slight clarification to my reply below:

"The group headers show the number of messages in each group _if you hover
your mouse pointer over the header_." The number of messages doesn't
actually show on the group header, but in a tooltip.
