Outlook 2002 hangs during send/receive

Can anyone help.

Outlook 2002 running on Win 200o Pro machine, connects on to our
corporate MS exchange server to retrieve e-mails into personal folder.
A couple of months ago it started to hang-up for no obvious reason &
it now does it 5/6 times every day - the only way out is to end task
it thru task manager. I have just disabled all the rules i have in
place which seems to have helped but i'm not sure it has cured the
problem.
All service packs / updates have been applied as per the Microsoft
Windows / Product updates web page.

I had this problem, it was the message rules conflicting with each other (I
think).
I disabled the Outlook junk mail filters.
