Outlook 2002 e-mail account setup suddenly fails

One of my e-mail accounts has started to go haywire at (apparently) random
times, averaging once every couple of weeks.

The failure is simply that outgoing messages no longer can be sent through
that account. They simply sit there in my "Outbox", and each Send/Receive
returns error messages. Incoming mail on that account continues to work
fine, and the outgoing messages go out fine if I send them via another
account. If I go to "Tools / E-Mail Accounts" and look at this account,
nothing has changed in the visinble setup info.

I can recover from a given failure by (a) writing down all of the setup info
for the failed account, (b) deleting the failed account, and (c) creating a
new account by manually entering in the exact same setup data.

But this is a bit of a drag. It would be nice to fix the problem so the
failures don't happen any more. Suggestions?

The problem just happened again, and in hopes that it will help I have
captured the exact error message:

"Task 'Sunward - Sending' reported error (0x80042108): 'The operation times
dout waiting for a response from the outgoing (SMTP) server. If you continue
to receive this message, contact your server administrator or internet
service provider (ISP)."

Sunward, by the way, is the name of the e-mail account suffering the failure.

I might add that another computer in my house, using another Sunward account
and the same internet connection, has no trouble of this sort.

If you are scanning outgoing messages with an antivirus scanner, disable
that feature. Also try lengthening the server timeout value in the Advanced
tab of the account ptoperties pages and make sure the send/receive interval
is no less than ten minutes.

Thanks. I've done all the things you suggest. Since the failure in question
is an intermittent vevnt, it will take a week or two to see if it has worked.
I'll report back.

Well, it happened again, 5 days after I did the fixes Brian suggested.

Just to make sure, here are the settings I changed:

1. Turned off Norton Antivirus scanning of outgoing e-mail messages.
2. Raised the send/receive interval to 10 minutes (from 3).
3. Raised the server timeout to 3 minutes (from 1, if I recall right).

Any further suggestions?
