Have I drawn a blank here? You say the list is always
alphabetical and i have given you the first eight in my
list - which are not alphabetical. I repeat below with
as much detail as hopefully is necessary to tell me where
I am going wrong.

Outlook 2002
click address book icon
I get a screen headed address book
There are columns for data the left hand of which is
headed 'name'
The first eight names are as follows
Philip Ball
David Marshall
Allen, Les
dickandkath
(e-mail address removed)
Peter Coates
Richard Steel
Gill Dandy

and confused as I am by what you tell me I don't think
that represents any sort of alphabetical order.

That's definitely not alphabetical order, and it's definitely also not the way Outlook typically works. In other words, I don't know of anyone who has ever seen that. What's the source of the data? Your Contacts folder? Look on the "Show names from" list.

Try this: In Outlook, select Tools, Options, then select Contact Options
and check what you have selected for the "File As" order.

The list is from the show names from the - personal
address book. I insert the data everytime I write to
someone and am told that the name is not recognised and
asked if I want to save it.
