my contacts list (address book) appears in random
alphabetical order. I am not referring to which name in
each line comes first but to the complete list. How do I
put it into alphabetical order?

Go to Tools > E-mail accounts > View or change existing directories or
address books > Outlook Address Book > Change. > Set your sort order there

Who ever I ask gives me that answer but the option to
sort the list alphabetically is not there. The only
option given is to list each individual name, first name
first or first name last. Nothing about the whole list.
How can the whole list be sorted alphabetically?

Why do you tell me the list is alphabetical? Here are
the first eight names - and the other 200 or more are
just as random. How do I get them sorted
alphabetically; will someone please tell me rather than
telling me that they are already alphabetical
Philip Ball, Alan Marshall, Allan,Les,
dickandkath,[email protected], Peter Coates, Richard
Steel, Gill Dandy. What sort of alphabet is that?

What do you mean? The entire lists sorts by name
alphabetically, always. You won't have a listing for Sue,
then for Maxwell, then for Russ. It will be Maxwell,
Russ, Sue.
The info Russ provided tells you how to control what
name is used for sorting, whether it's the last name or
the first name.

When you see this, are you looking at the address book or at your Contacts folder? If the latter, what field is it sorted by? If the former, which column?
