outlook 2002 contacts do not show in address dialog

I have an issue seeing my contacts in the address dialog when composing an
email message in outlook 2002. I recently installed outlook on a new machine
and imported my contacts from excel. I can see the contacts when I click on
the folder but they will not appear in the address dialog. I have checked
the box in the properties dialog to enable my contacts folder to be used as
an address book and it still does not work., I have also tried deleting all
address books and adding them back and it does not work. Any suggestions??

Importing from Excel was a poor choice for transferring Contacts. If you are
certain that you have configured the Outlook Address Book Service correctly,
examine your Contact records to see if the email addresses are valid and
resolved. Create a new Contact correctly and see if it appears in the
address view.

Russ - thanks for your help. From your answer I realized that when I
imported the contacts the default mapping ignored the email addresses. When
I added them to the map and re-imported it now works. Since Excel is a poor
way to do this what is the best way to move contacts from one computer to
another?

By copying and reusing your Outlook data file. Converting to a different
file format, then converting back is a good way to lose information not
transfer it.
The file you need is your Personal Folders file (*.pst) It's where all the
mail, calendar, contacts etc are stored.

Take a look at these pages for info on Outlook data backup or transfer:
