Any help appreciated,

I have just upgraded from Outlook 2000 to 2002.

How do I change the settings of my Address book/Contacts
so that when I compose a new message and select the To or
cc button the Contacts list will display the names
by 'last name, first name'. At present they are sorted
by 'Company name, last name, first name'. I have several
hundred contacts and so changing individual entries is not
practical.

Many thanks

Tell us what your File As fields are set to.
Your only options for sorting the Outlook Address Book are First, Last or
File As....

Russ,

Thanks for your reply.

'File as fields' are set to last name, first name.

The problem may be the address books: when I go to the TO
box and select names there are entries in Contacts but no
entries in PAB or Outlook AB.

In the TO or CC box I get : Company Last Name, First name

(For info I still have all my files on another laptop as
they were in Outlook 2000 in case something needs to be
recovered)

Best wishes

Not possible. If your File As fields were in fact Last, First--then your
Outlook Address Book would sort that way.
I suspect your Files As fields are in fact Company, Last, First. Look at
them and see. The File As field setting does not matter. That would only
apply to new Contacts, not existing ones.

Something is not as it seems! My fields are all set to
Last, First. I can see no option for Company, Last, First.
When I follow MKBA 319142 at point 1.e. the only option is
Contacts:Personal Folders; there is no Contacts:Mailbox. I
have followed the instruction to designate Contacts as an
Outlook Address Book.

How about my comment below re entries in Contacts but not
in PAB or OAB?
Can you take me back through some checking to establish
where I am?
Thanks
Glyn

You first.
How many Contacts Folders in your profile and where do they reside?
You should not be using a PAB. The OAB should have no entries. It merely
displays the contents of one or more of your Contacts Folders. So you need
to examine your profile and determine which Contact folders you are actually
displaying in the Outlook Address Book. Hint:
What do you see in Tools > E-mail accounts > View or change existing
directories or address books > Outlook Address Book > Change...?

Following your 'hint' I get to Contacts:Personal folders.

I have partially solved this problem whilst getting rid of
the fax numbers from my list - exporting to excel and
changing the fax header and re-importing. When I am
selecting TO for e-mails the list is now as I want 'last,
first' although I am now left with all my contacts in the
Contact Folder listed by name and not by company. Is there
a short cut to changing this?

Thanks for the help

Not sure what you're asking. Are you saying you want to change the File As
field for existing Contacts? That requires code.
