Outlook 2002 - can't send or receive anymore

I'm desperate - my outlook (office XP pro) will no longer send or
receive messages! Can't send anything (except a test message on one
of the pop3 accounts): if I start a new message, the accounts dropdown
is blank; if I hit reply, the account shows up but is not checked off,
and there is no send button. Can't receive anything; send/receive
button doesn't work, and send/receive commands are no longer on the
menu. The accounts are there in the view/change dialog, although I
can't move them up or down, or reset the default account.
Problem began shortly after I restarted my computer after a long
vacation. I tried reinstalling and repairing Outlook, deleting and
re-adding the email accounts, but no luck! Server names and passwords
are not the problem, either - I ran Outlook express and it downloaded
from the server perfectly. Will greatly appreciate any suggetions -
thanks.

A long shot, but have you also tried creating a new mail profile from
scratch?

Thanks, that was time-consuming but it worked!
