I'm running Outlook 2002 under Win XP Pro with all MS updates applied.

All of a sudden last month, Outlook stopped automatically doing a
Send/Receive every minute or so. I now have to manually do Send & Receive
to get/send my email. All of the settings under email options look ok.

PLEASE NOTE: I've had this operating PERFECTLY without a hitch for 5+ years
with the time interval set at 1 minute (in effect continuously...).

What happened? Any clues?

(Please no replies from "Russ" the MVP. He just doesn't get it...)

TIA-----------

I've had exactly the same for about the same period and know of others as
well. I've modified the registry as per the MS Knowledge Base but that
failed too. I use the same software also with MS updates applied together
with Norton Internet Security via BTOpenworld for ISP. I have asked both
but no response as yet.

It is a real pain to have to enter the password every minute or so and then
it seems to settle for a while and then another round of 5 or 10 lots of
password required.

Any help would be great please.

Did you install XP Internet Connection Firewall or some other firewall product
If so ICF, might stop a push from the Exchange server but a pull from the client might work
Try clicking on a different folder, ie. if you're in your Inbox, click on Sent or Outbox and see if that generates a Send\receive(the same as clicking send\receive).

Small wonder that no one has rushed to your aid. You post no information
that would permit any troubleshooting, then you insult the one person who
tried to help you in spite of that.

It is difficult to determine why automatic polling is failing when you do
not post your mail account type and connection type. If automatic polling
once worked and now fails, you also need to examine what changes were made
to your setup before automatic polling stopped working.

In general, here are the most common reasons automatic polling will fail in
Outlook:
1. You have created an unrealistic polling interval. Many users set their
polling interval to 1 minute thinking they will be downloading mail
continuously as it arrives. Such settings are not recommended. They put an
unnecessary strain on mail servers and can create conflicting polling
requests that can damage your Send/Receive Group or even your account
settings. 10 minutes is the recommended minimum.
2. While exiting Outlook, you inadvertently set your profile to Work Offline
(this option is immediately above the Exit command in the File menu).
3. You have a damaged Send/Receive Group as documented here:
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q312/3/36.asp
4. You have overridden your Send/Receive Group settings as documented here:
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q320/8/36.asp
5. Your mail account settings are corrupt. Recreate your mail account from
scratch.
6. Firewall software is blocking your transmission. Disable your Firewall
temporarily to see if automatic polling is restored.

Thanks for your POLITE reply.

Insult? All you have done so far is tell EVERYONE in numerous newsgroups
that the 1 minute interval which worked for years and now no longer works,
is wrong.

You never explain why it did work for years, but no longer does. Please
answer THAT.

What a ****ING MORON this Russ Valentine is! Rather than provide an obvious
simple fix, we get tons of techno-babble and especially bullshit excuses (1
minute intervals will cause server overload???)

Here's the fix that repaired my Outlook 2002 to PERFECT auto Send/Receive
operation:

- Simply go to Tools-Send/Receive Setting and make sure that "Disable
Scheduled Send/Receive" is UNCHECKED.

Somehow, mine had been changed to a checked status (probably by some MS
Windows Update - certainly not by me, I didn't even know the option was
there.)

Make sure it's unchecked and your 1 minute auto send/receive should (once
again) start functioning as it did for years like mine.

Russ: Here's a clue: Give simple, common sense tips based on your years of
experience to the users of this newsgroup, or remove the "MVP" from your
signature line...
