Outlook 2000 - unable to delete items from Deleted Items folder

I'm hoping somone may be able to tell me how to fix the following:

Problem:
when I try and delete anything from the Deleted Items folder, I get the following message:
"The messaging interface has returned an unknown error. If the problem persists, restart Outlook"

What I've done:
Run scanpst.exe - this doesn't come up with any errors.
Run Outlook's 'Detect and Repair' function. For a while this didn't work (I'd get an error msg: Error 1916. Error installing ODBC driver manager, ODBC error 0. Contact your support personnel.); however, having read some other posts, I've now installed MDAC 2.5 [I think some files had been deleted - possibly when uninstalling another program?], which at least appears to have fixed THAT problem, ie I can now run the 'Detect and Repari' program.

The original problem, however, remains - I can't delete items from the 'Deleted Items' folder.

Anyone come across this before, and able to offer advice?

Many thanks in advance

Edit the message;
1.. Open the message by double clicking on it

2.. Choose Edit-> Edit message

3.. Type or remove some characters (I usually type 3 spaces)

4.. Save and close the message

5.. Try to delete the message again

Hi Roady

Thanks for the suggestion. It worked for one message, but then wouldn't work for any others. Again, I got the same error message. I have experienced this in the past, ie it seems to have been fixed, but then stops

Oh yes, and I've got about 1700 deleted items, so it would've taken me a little while to get rid of them all!

I realise it's probably bad form to reply to your own posts (!), but I think I've worked out why SOME emails can be deleted, and others not. If the message is dated prior to some time late January, I can't delete it; if however, it's more recent, I CAN

Try SHIFT+DELETE as well and run scanpst.exe again as well.

Another way to go would be to create a new pst-file and copy your valid
messages to it and then delete the original pst-file
