Outlook 2000 opens, then dies on me

Hi

First of all - thanks if you can help on this - I'm
getting desperate!

I've run Outlook 2000 on Windows XP Pro for nearly a year
now, with occasional hangups and closure, but over the
past 36 hours I've been getting messages of "Outlook has
experienced a problem and needs to close" while just
reading or preparing a message, or even just having it
open in the background while working with something
else.

I'm non-technical, so have limited myself to running
Detect & Repair three times - and it even hanged then,
although the 3rd time behind the hang message the
Completed OK message was also visible. No improvement
though.

I'm tempted to reload Outlook (once I've backed up my pst
files), but am reluctant to do so without advice first.
Or do you know another resolution to this problem?

Incidentally, I'm using Netfolders to share one of the
pst files with a client, but that's been running for a
year plus too. This could kill my one-woman-band VA
business. Please help if you can.

Thanks
Karen

Does the hang up occur when running Outlook in safe mode? (start | run |
outlook.exe /safe | ok button)

Neo [MVP Outlook]
Due to the Swen virus, all e-mails sent to this account will be deleted
w/out reading.

Note: This will shutdown the netfolder share temporarily to help isolate to
problem if it is a core application dll or something along the line of a
corrupted user information file, view, .etc.

Hi Neo

No -- seems OK in safe mode. What does this suggest to
you?

Thanks
Karen

Neo -- cancel that. After a prolonged session (approx. 1
hour), it just crashed in safe mode. I'm not sure if I
should be adding contacts etc. and collecting mail in
this mode though, but I need to get on, so my options are
limited. Hope I don't lose the data!

If I have to re-install, is there anything else I should
look out for, other than backing up the pst files?

Thanks.

Starting Outlook in safe mode forces outlook to load w/out any custom views,
toolbars, addins, .etc. When it crashes, does it give you any information
as to the cause or in what file? There is no harm in adding contacts,
send/receive mail, .etc.
