Outlook 2000 locks up

My Outlook 2000 locks up after about 2 minutes. I can
download email and after reading a couple email, the hour
glass appears.

In task manager two Outlook applications are running and
they are linked to processes for explorer.exe and
outlook.exe. They both report in task manager as "Not
Responding"

I have downloaded the latest updates with no positive
results, and I have upgraded the Microsoft Messenger. My
virus software is current.

Can anyone help with a recommendation or fix?

I am using Win. XP Pro.
