Outlook 2000 doesn't start anymore.

I am using Outlook 2000 already for a couple of years (in windows xp). Since
last week it won't start anymore. If I click the button, while checking
processes in the taskmanager, I see OUTLOOK.EXE popping up for a second or 2.
Then nothing happens.

It seems that problems started after Norton discovered a virus (downloader).
In some way it made Norton unstable. I have reset my system to an earlier dat
and since then outlook refuses to start.

I tried already:
- starting after switching of Norton ptotection.
- renaming outcmd.dat
- running OL with /cleanviews
- starting OL after removing the archive and outlook dat-files
- re-installing MS-office

Who has any other suggestion?

Are you using Outlook 2000 in Internet Mail Only mode or Corporate/Workgroup
mode? See Help>About.
 
I'm using OL200 on a stand-alone PC, only to read and send internetmail.
I defined several users, none of them can start OL.

Sorry, I misunderstood your question.
As I cannot open OL at the moment, I cannot verify the mode.

It's running at my PC at home installed by an office-package for personal use.
So I suppose it's not the corporate/workgroup mode.

Probably. Do you have any other portion of Office installed? If so, start
one of the other apps and look in Help for "Detect and Repair" or use
Control Panel's Add or remove Programs to perform a repair install. Use the
Inbox Repair Tool (SCANPST.EXE) to perform a repair of your PST. Look for
the file %AppData%\Microsoft\Outlook\username.srs and %UserProfile%\Local
Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\outcmd.dat delete them. If
those don't work, it's time for a new mail profile. Start regedit and look
for the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\WIndows Messaging Subsystem\Profiles\username\Microsoft
Outlook Internet Settings. Delete this key and restart Outlook.

Thanks for your help. I managed to get OL running again.
The .pst file was not damaged, I managed to open it by transfering that file
to another PC.

This what I did to solve the problem:
- I uninstalled Norton internet security.
- I uninstalled caretaker (anti-spam program).
- I renamed the outlook-folder that contained the .pst file
- I renamed the outcmd and the "outlook setting" files.
- I re-installed MS office.
After that it was possible to restart OL. By renaming the folder again I
could reach my old data too. I deleted the old outcmd and outlook setting
files.
Afterwards I re-installed Norton and OL remained OK.

I think that the earlier found downloader-virus in some way corrupted the
norton or the outlook settings.

Here is a fix for one specific issue with Outlook 2000:
Symptoms
After installing iTunes 10 on a Windows PC with Microsoft Outlook 2000 installed, Microsoft Outlook 2000 will not open.

Products Affected
iTunes 10 for Windows, Microsoft Outlook 2000

Resolution
iTunes will sync with Microsoft Outlook 2003, Microsoft Outlook 2007, or Microsoft Outlook 2010. If you use Microsoft Outlook 2000, you can resolve this issue by renaming the "OutlookChangeNotifierAddIn.dll" file. This file can be renamed however you choose, and is found in the following default location depending on your operating system:

Windows XP, Windows Vista (32-bit) or Windows 7 (32-bit):
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\OutlookChangeNotifierAddIn.dll
Windows Vista (64-bit) or Windows 7 (64-bit):
C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\OutlookChangeNotifierAddIn.dll
If you install Microsoft Outlook 2003, Microsoft Outlook 2007, or Microsoft Outlook 2010 after renaming this file, you may need to reinstall iTunes 10 before being able to sync Contacts, Calendars, email account information, or Notes.
