My Outlook 2000 (running under XP) has started booting, but only for a few
seconds, then it shuts down by itself. I cannot access new or stored
messages, manage the personal folders, etc. I get a popup Microsoft Outlook
message that says:

Error signature
AppName: outlook.exe AppVer: 9.0.0.6604 ModName: emailscanner.dll
ModVer: 1.0.0.1 Offset: 00040df3

I have re-installed Microsoft Office 2000 (including Outlook 2000), but the
problem remains. Outlook still boots and then disappears in seconds.

Do I have a bad sector? Maybe a dll conflict? I have no idea how to fix it.

Have you tried opening Outlook in safe mode? emailscanner.dll sounds like
it's your antivirus integration with Outlook causing a problem, and no AV
integration is required. Your real time scanner will catch everything it's
updated for.

Start > Run > outlook.exe /safe
(note the space between outlook.exe and /safe)

If Outlook opens successfully, it means there's a third party
integration/add in with Outlook that is preventing the proper functioning of
the application.

Applications don't "boot", only the PC itself does. Applications start.

This indicates you have some third-party mail scanner installed. Uninstall it
and your Outlook problem should vanish.

I encounter the same problem, (ModVer 1.0.0.1 / offset 000.fb95 / AppVer
9.0.0.2416 / ModName emailscanner.dll) but what is a "third-party mail
scanner"? can it be registry booster i use from uniblue.com?

It's unlikely that a "registry booster" (whatever that is) will scan incoming
mail. Usually, mail scanning is done with an antivirus or -spam application.
Do you have either of these installed an, if so, which one?

A third party email scanner is most likely your antivirus.

If you can open Outlook in safe mode, something is interfering with the
function of Outlook. If you have the same error about emailscanner.dll it
sounds like your AV.

Start > Run > outlook.exe /safe

If you're using Windows Vista or 7:
Start > Start Search > outlook.exe /safe

Note: there is a space between outlook.exe and /safe
