Outlook 2000 - attachments not always received...

We are running Office 2000. Almost all the time I sent an
email with an attachment, the recipient does not receive
it. Sometimes when the document is re-sent the recipient
will receive it, sometimes I need to perform several
attempts. Sometimes I need to give up.

I cannot find any setting in Outlook which may be
responsible for this problem, and it affects many people
in the company worldwide. Would the company Exchange
server be a suspect ?

I have seen this same problem. Here's some more detail from my perspective.

* The sender is using Outlook 2000. They send an e-mail with an attachment. The attachment might be a text document (created in Notepad) or some sort of more complex document, like a Word or Excel document.

* The receiver is using Outlook Express 6.

* The message shows up in the OE inbox as a message without a "paperclip" icon, indicating that there is no attachment.

* When the message is opened up, there is likewise no indication that there is an attachment.

* The size of the e-mail message is such that it would appear there is an attachment. For example, the size of the e-mail message is 29KB, with only a two letter message text, no subject line, and only one recipient.

* When looking at the detail properties...message source of the message, the following is found within:

X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.2800.1165

This is a multi-part message in MIME format.

As Peter relates, this problem is intermittant. Sometimes attachments work, sometimes not.

Outlook sends a winmail.dat file attached for rich text formatting. Change the setting in Tools -> Options -> Mail Format to "Plain text" and uncheck box to "use microsoft Word to edit email". This should aleviate the problem as Outlook Express (and every other email client than Outlook) cannot read Rich Text format. HTML should be fine to use as well.

Sorry, I don't buy RTF explanation. We've been using Outlook 2000 in our office for 2 years, and regularly send out multiple Excel and Word attachments to a large group. All of a sudden, some are having problems receiving them. I've been told that even messages I send without attachments are received with 'winmail.dat' apparently attached
We do not have ann internal mail server. However - I know our service provider has updated their mail servers, and made various security changes in the last couple of months. I feel that the problems are with their mail server, or at the other end, within the receiving mail server.
