Hi,

I have a question regarding the use of both versions of
Outlook. If I use and opened my mailbox with Outlook 2000
on one computer and also use Outlook 2003 on another
computer, are there any issues concerning this usage?
Will the junkmail feature in 2003 is still effective?

Thanks
PeteD

As far as I know when you open a pst in Outlook 2003 then the file is converted to 2003 format which is incompatible with Outlook 2000 format.

No, that's not the case. No automatic conversion of .pst files *ever* takes
place. If the user wants to convert a pre-2003 .pst file to the new 2003
format, they have to create a new Unicode/2003 .pst file and import the
older .pst file into it.

Pete's question actually seemed to be about his mailbox, presumably an
Exchange mailbox, though. It is not recommended to use different versions of
Outlook with the same Exchange mailbox. For one thing, rules are handled
differently and may get messed up.

Actually I didn't have to do that Sue. I have always had the same pst file ever since Outlook 2000. I just point the new version of Outlook to the old pst. That's all I do.

And that's perfectly fine, too. My point is that if the user wants a
Unicode, larger capacity .pst file that contains their old data, there is no
automatic conversion process as your earlier message suggested.

OK then. You are saying that my current pst I am using is NOT in 2003 format? Since I use the pst as I described it is NOT in 2003 format? In other words I can take the pst I am using (in Outlook 2003) and do the same thing by pointing a Outlook 2000 install to it and it will be used by Outlook 2000 with no issue?

Sue,

If the user had been upgraded from 2000 to 2003 are the
rules converted to 2003 format?. And if he uses 2000 on
another pc, will the rules be converted back or which
format wins?

Any other issues? The user intended to use 2000 because
the pc os can only support office 2000 or xp. The outlook
will always be running for redirection purposes to his
mobile device.

Thanks
PeteD

Exactly. If you are using a .pst file that you created with Outlook 2000,
then it is not a .pst file in Outlook 2003 Unicode format. That means that
it is still subject to the 2gb capacity limit.

I haven't played around with the rules myself yet, but I know that Outlook
2003 stores all rules in the default store. Earlier versions store some in
the mailbox, some locally, so I would expect problems with some of those
client-side rules. It will take some testing to figure out exactly what will
happen.

Other issues that people have experienced with multiple versions:

-- Outlook not shutting down when both OL2000 and OL2003 are accessing the
same mailbox.

-- Free/busy oddities, especially with Exchange 5.5

-- Problems with custom views

Another issue I had was I kept getting message that I had duplicate copies
of the same message and that made me keep picking which version of the
message I wanted to keep. Any way I can get rid of that problem. I really
liked Outlook 2003 but ended up reformatting my HD and reinstalling OL2K to
get rid of that problem. What would happen if I now did an install of 2003
over my 2000 install? I have an old laptop which I can't convert toOL
2003 since it's a WIN98 machine.

Thanks for any help you can give.
