After installing sp2, outlook (using exchange 2000 sp3)
doesn't want to send or receive emails anymore. It doesn't
matter what version of outlook 2000/2002/2003 the same
thing happens. When you try to send an email the mail just
sits in the outbox for a minute before it goes, you can
click on the outbox before this and the mail will go. When
new email arrives you can't tell so you have click on the
inbox every five minutes to check to see if you have new
mail. I have reinstalled office and this doesn't have any
affect. the only solution to the problem is to do a system
restore to an earlier point. uninstalling sp2 doesn't do
anything so a system restore has to be done. this happens
on all 5 test machines. i have just completely rebuilt 1
machine to see if it had anything to do with corporate
software we use. After a fresh install of xp office is
installed and nothing else, as soon as sp2 is installed
then the emails start to fail again.

am i the only one who is having this problem?

First, on your network, presuming everyone's on the same LAN, disable the XP
firewall. Your network should be protected at the perimeter - and even in
SP2, the Windows Firewall was really not designed for LAN-facing
connections, although it's a lot easier to configure for that, I don't
bother. New message notification relies on UDP packets sent from the server
to the client....so this is a common problem when users have software
firewalls enabled while on the LAN.
