Outline Numbering - still having fun!

I've read all the postings and FAQ sheets. They seem like it should do the trick. I have even followed the suggestion to delete the existing fields and also use reset. I don't use the toolbar or icons and have always used Format/Style with success. In my lengthly document, the outline numbering still does not flow properly. If I change one section, it affects others even when I use Format/Style to restart numbering and set the Link Level to the previous Level. I am using Word 97 and have the option to migrate before the rest of my co-workers to XP. This has a negative side that my work product will be in a different version from my workgroup and we do share documents.

Does anyone know if some or all of my outline numbering problems will be solved if we migrate to XP?

I was hoping someone who works more with numbering would answer, here. It might have helped if
oyu'd posted in the word.numbering newsgroup...

Basically, your problems will not necessarily be solved if you move to Word 2002 or 2003. There
are features that can *help* to settle down numbering problems, but they require working with
STYLES. (And in order to get any kind of reliability with numbering in earlier versions, you
should be working with styles there, too.)

From what you describe, the particular document probably has any number of list templates, and
the numbering is linked to the templates "willy-nilly".
