In Word 2003, I used the List Number style to create a simple numbered list.
When I hover the mouse over any of the numbers and click, all of the numbers
are highlighted in gray. I assume that this is normal behavior, but I do not
know why or what benefit there is. Any ideas? The same thing happens, BTW,
in any outline numbered situation. Bullets, too. Thanks,

Ross Payne

I believe this is controlled by the Keep Track of Formatting option. What
you are seeing is that the whole style series (in this case one of the
numbered lists) is being highlighted.

Terry -- Thanks for your response. However, I have "Keep Track of
Formatting" unchecked in Tools, Options, Edit.

From the Tools menu, select Options and then View and in the Field Shading
pull down, select Never.

Thanks, Doug, however that doesn't change it either. I'm wondering what the
benefit of having all the numbers highlighted is.

Ross,
Just a thought but you can easily select all items of the same list and
apply another numbering scheme. It even works when there are some unnumbered
paragraphs in between.
When you apply bullets or numbering with the icons on the formatting toolbar
you can hold down your mouse key and drag to indent the whole thing in one
movement.

I think that this provides a way to modify the character formatting of
outline numbers directly (that is, without using the Font button in
the Numbering dialog box).
