Hi. I am using Word 2003. Is it possible to create a numbered list as
follows?
1. A.
B.
C.
D.

2. A.
B.
C.
D.

I have tried customizing an outline list, but it doesn't seem to be
working. Did I mention I loathe outline numbered lists?(!) Or maybe
it's that they loathe me...
Thanks! Colleen.

Colleen, until some other contributor shows you a better way, here's what I
would do:

Set up Heading 1 as follows:

In the Number Style box choose the 1,2,3 arabic number style.
A "1" will appear in the Number Format box. Place your cursor in that same
box alongside the "1" and hit the enter key four or five times to insert
spaces. Then manually type an "A"

Then set up Heading 2 as follows:

Under "Level," select 2
Under "Number style" select the A,B,C option
In the "Start at" box choose B and then set whatever alignment, tab and
indent options you wish.

After each heading 1 you will, of course, need to go to Heading 2 to start
the alphabetic numbers and then back to Heading 1 when you wish the numbers
to increment. As you probably know, the shortcut keys for Heading 1 is
Ctrl+Alt+1 and Ctrl+Alt+2 for heading 2.

Hi Island Girl: Thanks very much! I am going to try your method. It
actually makes sense to me and as I say I am not that proficient with
outline numbering. Thanks again! Colleen.
