I've got an outline that I can't get to look like an outline... it's
numbering correctly, but the sublevels aren't indenting. I've looked
all through Format > Outline (or whatever it's called) and can't seem to
see the answer--perhaps it's because as usual I'm looking for text that
doesn't exist and it's called something entirely different from what I
expect it to be.

What I'm seeing is:

1. blatherblatherblather
a. yadayadayada

instead of

1. blatherblatherblather
a. yadayadayada

TIA.

Thanks for the info, and I'm sure when/if I want to learn Styles it'll
come in handy. But at the moment, all I have is a few extremely simple
documents and it would take much much longer to set all that up than it
would be to position the text manually with a fixed font for all the
documents together.

If your documents are really simple, and doesn't need much
editing in the future, maybe it's easier to just enter
numbers manually, by typing them, instead of using Word's
numbering features. Please note that if manual numbering
is going to work, you'll need to deselect the options on
the 'AutoFormat as you type' tab of the Tools>AutoCorrect
dialog box to use automatically numbered and bulleted
lists; otherwise Word will try to create numbering for you.

On the other hand, if you plan to create a little more
complex documents and/or documents that need a lot of
editing, such as moving numbered items around, Word's
numbering features might be very useful. If this is the
case, getting in control is the important thing to think
about. And the only way to get in control of Word's
outline numbering is to tie each numbering level to a
unique paragraph style, as explained at

www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html

Using paragraph styles to apply numbering also adds the
possibility of saving a numbering scheme to a template for
easy reuse.
