You have specified the port incorrectly, it should be 465 not 456

Tools > Accounts > your email > Properties > Advanced

Another thing... where did you get the 465 (456) from originally?
Normally the SMTP port is 25 so you might try changing it to that.

After that... it might be an anti virus problem, which are you using?
Norton and McAfee cause all sort of problems with Windows Mail
and should be entirely uninstalled and replaced with a compatible
(free) product like Avast http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
with the (superfluous) email scanning component omitted
or at the very least disabled.

So... give port 25 a go and then get rid of dodgy AV.s.

ps. Have you a message stuck in your outbox?

If you are virus scanning email, disable the task and try again. It is
redundant, and can cause receiving/sending issues such as you are
experiencing. Secondly, does ntlworld require the use of ssl? The
following site does not indicate that ssl is required:
http://www.virginmedia.com/helpsupp...psupport/support/adding_an_account_to_oe.html
If not, on the advanced tab, untick the ssl button, make sure your port
is reset to 25 from 465 and try mail again.
