Outgoing mail on non-provider dsl connection fails

I have read numerous other posts aobut similar problems:
Outlook has can't seem to send mail over a non-provider DSL
connection.

In my case, the provider is Earthlink. Earthlink provides a workaround
to authenticate that you are a member--but Outlook's outgoing mail is
still not sent.

That this is an Outlook problem is demonstrated by the fact that
Outlook Express will work with Earthlink's authentication process.

My frustration is in seeing that this problem has been reported over
the past three years, starting in Outlook 2000 - and it still doesn't
work.

Does anyone know of a work around? Is there a registry key change we
can do?

What error messages are you getting? Are you connected using EarthLink DSL
trying to send mail using a non-EarthLink SMTP server or are you using
another ISP connection and want to send mail using your EarthLink account?

With Outlook 2002 it just hangs on the sending process. It receives
mail just fine, but won't send it.

In Outlook 2000 I would get time out errors.

Outlook Express works fine.

I am sending mail from my Earthlink account through a non-Earthlink
DSL connection from my office network. Earthlink has authentication
settings for this: The smtp server is smtpauth.earthlink.net; they
also require that the box "My outgoing server requires
authentication", be checked, together with specifying email address
and password--all of which I have done, and rechecked several
times--and which works with Outlook Express)

Thanks,
Ken Rip

Let me correct my former response:
I do get an error code, 0x800ccc0F, "The connection to the server was interupted".
This only happens on sending mail, not receiving it.

Glory be,
I finally got a solution that works.
It involved enabling the MTU setting, and setting it to 1492, on the
dsl router (linksys).

no more sending errors.

I am having a similar problem. My DSL provider is Verizon
and I am using a Linksys BEFSX41 router. I have two
accounts in Oulook: 1) the default account is Verizon and
functions properly, and 2) an Earthlink account. Verizon
said that the way I had it setup should work. The problem
that I have experienced is that Replies (and I suspect
Forwards) to emails received on the Earthlink account do
not get delivered to the receipent even though they appear
in the Sent Item folder normally.

I will try changing the MTU on the Linksys to see if it
then works. What led you to think of the MTU?

Thanks,

George

George,
I found an article on the Microsoft Knowledge Base in response to a
search on the error code I was getting "0x800ccc0F"--it pointed me to
another site where I got the directions what to change and how to do
it. As I understand it, the problem was in Outlook sending larger
packets than the router would take.
Wish the best in finding the right solution.
