Outbox Corrupted in Outlook 2002?

Outlook 2002 - there is a message visible in Outbox but, when I try to
delete it, I get:

"The messaging interface has returned an unknown error. If the problem
persists, restart Outlook."

Outlook has been restarted many times, nothing changes. The machine is not
in the middle of a send or receive when I try to do this, and it won't send
anything.

What should I do? Is there a file I can delete/rename that Outlook will
automatically recreate to fix this problem?

TIA.

Place Outlook Off-line (File-> Work Off-line) and restart Outlook. Then try
to delete the message again

I set it to work off-line as you suggested, shut it down, restarted, and
still get precisely the same behavior.

Can I just delete the outbox file? Unfortunately, I cannot find one. My
computer has a file named outbox with a .db? extension but I can find
nothing similar on this computer, even searching hidden/system files/folders
on all of drive C:

Thanks in advance for any other suggestions.

No you can't.
See if one of the following helps;

first but keep Outlook in Offline mode though)

Found the problem - he had over 1000 items in "deleted item" including many
large attachments. Clearing out that folder returned the behavior of his
email to normal.
