Out of Range?

Help! I just received my new Dell PC 2400. I started it
up and hooked it up to an extra Monitor I have. It
started with the acceptance of the Dell guidelines at the
beginning and showed the PC serial number on the screen.
The I hit agree and Windows XP tried to start. Well the
Monitor clicked off and showed a message OUT OF RANGE.
What does that mean? I tried to reboot the pc but it
would not turn off. I had to unplug it because of course
could not see the Monitor to sign off the correct way.
What do you think?

The "out of range" means that the signal from the video to the monitor was
beyond the frequency range of the monitor.

Is it a new monitor that shipped with the Dell system? If so, I would give
them a call, as something is amiss.

If it is a very old monitor, I can see how this could happen. You may need
to try rebooting the PC into "safe mode" and setting the video card
properties to some safe, default values (800X600, 16 colors, etc...), then
trying higher resolutions.

To get into safe mode, when it is booting, hit the F8 key, and you will be
sent to a dos screen that lets you select safe mode.

Thank you for your response concerning the Out of Range
issue I have with my
new PC. You wrote:

Unfortunately I am not able to see to get into the
safemode. The picture does not come on. It only shows a
menu Floating around a black screen saying (Out of Range)
It gives some type of mhz numbers. I don't remember. It
is an old monitor.

I have another PC hooked up to a newer Dell Monitor. I am
using my old PC write now to write you. I just took my
Dell out of the box and had an old Monitor to hook it up
to.
Thanks ahead of time for your answer. The old monitor was
working fine a few weeks ago. It is a 13" small monitor
about 5 years old.

Hook the newer monitor up to the new system, then reset as you were
previously advised. Then connect the old monitor and see if that resolves
it.
