Hi,

I have a Windows 2000 adv server with functions as Files Server, Appl Server
and configured as a seperate domain. Users does not log in to this domain,
but just use it as File and Appl Server.

Now the problem is that the Disk Space in C drive is showing 200MB only. I
have done all possible steps to free up the space like shifting the page
files etc. We have Raid 5 configured on same.

The question is that, there are user profiles in C:\winnt\profiles folder
occupying 1 GB space. Is it safe to delete these profiles since i guess it is
used only for the user logging to the domain. Or is it being used due to the
Files and Folders security defined on same for all those users ?

Please advise. Thanks in advance.

Strange. I thought all profiles were stored in c:\Documents and Settings.
Is this an upgrade from a WinNT Server?

Anyway, deleting a user profile affects this user only.

Regardless of this: If one of my servers had less than 5 GBytes of free
space then I would take immediate action. Disks are cheap but fixing
a system that has run out of space can be very tedious. It can also
cause downtime when you can least afford it.

What is the newest file date stamp in each profile folder? If it's years
old, it's probably safe to delete them. If they are this week, something 1s
going on that you don't know about.

You might want to compress the folders and subfolders first to be safe.

Since the server needs immediate attention, with some applications being
critical running; to extend C drive does not seem possible without formatting
! Is there any way to extend the C Drive without formatting and without any
third party softwares ? The server is quite old. I think it was upgraded from
a WinNT Server.

Thanks for your reply.

The modified date for almost all the profiles is of 2005, 2004 and 2003
except for the All Users (default) profile. This profile itself is 975MB in
size. It has a folder for NTBackup containing Catalog - 533 MB and one of
Symantec - 426 MB. I think i would delete some of the old catalog after
backup and also the symantec folder since the corporate av server is now
shifted to other.

Compressing files would make the server slow i guess !

Can C Drive be extended anyway without Reinstalling things ?

Thanks for reply.

It seems my words about getting painted into a corner were
prophetic and you have already reached this corner . . .

Extending drive C: without formatting is not possible. Here is
what you could do:

1. Connect an empty disk to the server's IDE controller.
2. Partition & format it under Win2000 Server.
3. Boot the machine with a Bart PE boot CD
(http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/#download).
4. Use xcopy.exe with the appropriate switches to copy your
existing partitions to the IDE disk. Make sure to copy
hidden files, system files, attributes and ACL information.
5. Replace the your RAID disks with larger disks.
6. Boot the server with your Bart CD, partition & format the
new disks and perform Step 4 in reverse.

This is a safe operation because you're leaving your old
RAID array intact.

Creating a Bart PE boot CD takes a fair amount of time
but since you're not prepared to spend any money on
this exercise, you'll have to spend time. On the other
hand this CD is a terrific tool for the serious system
administrator.

Well, sorry for late reply.

As for the Raid5, its configured with 4 disks of 36.5 GB each, divided
logically into two. C drive is only given 4GB of space with rest to F drive
used to share files. Two other disks are spanned with total of 32.5 x 2 GB !

As in this case, if i connect another 36.5 GB HDD to IDE Controller and
xcopy the C to same and format the complete C and F drives (one disk) and
again partition it with more space to the C drive, then copy reverse the
xcopy from new HDD to the C drive ? I hope it sounds ok !!!

Please reply.

Thanks.
