I haven't been on anything resembling Usenet in about 10 years. How I can
get other newsgroups to browse besides Microsofts? I am on Windows Mail in
Vista. Thank you in advance.

Setup a new news server and have it retrieve groups. Your ISP may provide a
news server so check their website. If they don't then there are a couple
of free news servers or you can pay for one from Giganews, Easynews etc.

Go to your ISP's support site. Normally there will be instructions
there.

My reply is at the bottom of your sent message.

You may find that your ISP doesn't offer Usenet any more. A lot of noise has
been made about the death of Usenet from the major ISPs. As has already been
mentioned you can go pay for full Usenet access or you can get limited free
access. You can also just use Google Groups. I haven't found any lasting
free Usenet providers that offered access to the alt.binary.* hierarchy.

However... I did some looking and discovered that a cheap subscription to a
dialup service, in this case LocalNet.com, enabled me unfettered Usenet
access and they had the added bonuses of giving me a dialup account should I
need one for whatever reason and they allowed me (you may have to REALLY dig
in the FAQs or get a good tech on the phone who knows what they speak of) to
login to their Usenet with my account credentials.

In my case it was news2.localnet.com as I recall but it isn't configured
right now. It is either news2 or news1. I'm pretty sure.

There are still a few newsgroup servers that aren't part of the Big Eight.
SpamCop and Lockergnome were both still maintaining theres as I recall. I am
sure there are piles of others out there as well.

Well, maybe not piles. Some...

If I'm right... you're connecting via Rogers cable in Quebec, right?

Doesn't look like it has a news server.

Check this one out:

www.motzarella.org

FREE and reliable.

I've found several good ones here:

http://www.disenter.com/

But, no, you're right, the free group binaries are hard to find. My Rogers
service only offers Microsofts.

Usenet is pay these days. lol

It used to be the cheapest thing around. Even cheaper than Telnet and BBS.
I've been SO away from it for so long. LOL

I left Usenet to go to Yahoo and Yahoo groups and I've been there ever
since, mainly.

Thanks, anyway. I'll check those out. :)

You aren't getting those from Rogers. You're getting those direct
from the Microsoft servers (Windows Mail is preset for that).

There are free news servers out there. Google albasani, motzarella,
tornevall, aioe (no sign in = nntp.aioe.org) and datemas.de.

That's not what he asked.

Yes, they are from the Microsoft servers, but Rogers offers them and has
their custom browser package in with the deal. Yes, they are preincluded in
with the Mail.

No, that's good. Thanks for those. I think those might be what I'm looking
for. 8D
