Chaos Master

Hi.

What alternative shells are available for Windows (98SE)?

I have tried:

- bbLean: crashes the system hard (illegal operation on KERNEL32.DLL)
when I open menus and foobar2000 didn't work when it was running.

- LiteStep: doesn't seem to behave correctly on Windows 98SE.
Various plug-ins are made for Windows 2000/XP and use too much system
resources.

You could try SharpE
http://sourceforge.net/projects/sharpe/

GeoShell
http://www.geoshell.com/index.asp

LiteShell
http://www.labyrinth.net.au/~mosses/rob/index.html

DarkStep
http://www.darkstep.com/

There are also other flavours of BlackBox that might not have such an
unfortunate effect:

Xoblite
http://xoblite.net/

BB4WIN
http://www.bb4win.org/news.php

I agree that LiteStep is becoming more and more committed to W2000 and
XP, which is a great pity. I suppose one of the older distros,
together with themes older than a year, using the plug-ins called,
should work. Not that it's a satisfactory solution :-(

BB4WIN

I have tried those... BB4WIN isn't in the level of bbLean -- it lacks a
feature that I really need:

- have an always-on-top taskbar/system tray, yet one that program windows
can't overlap.

Will try those suggestions.

Thanks

Yep. My apologies. I don't know when that changed.

This latest alpha is an immense download for a mere shell. It's also
the most memory-hungry, though not by a huge amount. Several things
aren't working as they should, but I suppose that's to be expected
with an alpha. Looks like it has a lot of potential when it's more
mature.

there are a bunch. some lists are on desktopian.org and shellcity.net.

i've only tried Litestep, Liteshell, Go, Talisman and a couple of
others. honestly i use Explorer most of the time, since i use the
desktop a lot.

You can set the taskbar to AOT and then set your desktop margins so
that maximised windows won't overlap the taskbar. This can be done in
the main bb4win version as well as the two branches (bbLean and
xoblite).

- LiteStep: doesn't seem to behave correctly on Windows 98SE.

Y'know, I tried LiteStep for a while, but found configuring it to be a
gigantic hassle. Any little thing you want to change, you type code. It's
been awhile so I don't remember all of my grievances, but in the end, I just
returned to Explorer. (Still, it was nice NOT have Explorer on my task
list.)

I don't have many problems changing code... (I have done some work on
Linux and UNIX like Irix and Solaris, after all).

It's just the excess resource usage that is my problem.

The settings are probably in extensions.rc. In bbLean, they're listed
like:

# desktop margins for special desktop setups
# -1 = off
blackbox.desktop.marginLeft: 36
blackbox.desktop.marginRight: 36
blackbox.desktop.marginTop: 46
blackbox.desktop.marginBottom: 60

Well, it's not changing code per se; it was the need to do it for the
slightest change I wanted to make.
