As a longtime user of the excellent 98lite software, I was
thrilled to learn that Shane Brooks now offers a similar
utility for Windows 2000 and Windows XP.
XP lite allows you to do what Bill Gates has testified to be
impossible - remove Internet Explorer from Windows. You can
totally clean your system of those parts of Windows which are
exploited by virus and worm creators:
Internet Explorer
Outlook Express
Windows Address Book
Windows Scripting Host
Windows Media Player
And anything else that you don't need/want/trust:
Windows Update Manager
Fax Service
NetMeeting
Hyper Terminal
Chat
Microsoft Agent
DirectX
DirectShow
Paint
....almost 100 Windows components total.
Normally, if you tried to delete these parts of Windows, the
Windows File Protection would simply replace the missing parts
upon your next bootup. XPlite and 2000lite allow you to turn
OFF the File Protection, remove whatever parts of Windows you
don't want, then turn File Protection back ON, and your new
configuration is fully protected.
I bought 2000lite last week, and removed almost everything
from my system it would allow. WOW! It got rid of more than
200 MB of files. More importantly, my system after bootup
uses about 42 MB less RAM than it did before the cleansing!
Unreal...
I posted this here, even though this program costs $39.95 and
is therefore off-topic, because I know many on this newsgroup
use freeware programs instead of the virulent applications
Microsoft forces us to install along with Windows. Now we can
get rid of the offending code altogether.
With your system cleansed of security risks, you can get
completely off the treadmill of endless MS security patches
and updates. I'm running Windows 2000 Pro with no Service
Packs, patches, or updates. Solid as a rock. It the best
money I ever spent on software, and a must-have for any
dedicated freeware advocate or clear-thinking Windows user.
