[I know this doesn't belong here. However, the posters are are almost
unfailingly willing to help. I checked out alt.os.windows-xp and found
it a terrible cesspool.]

I built my k7s5a amd1700+ last winter and use xp pro. At first it was
great, but performance has gone steadily downhill. I solved some problem
along the way, but I can't figure out the latest. (My isp is ATT)

When I load a page, almost any page, it loads seemingly completely, the
green progress bar chart at the bottom goes to it's full length, and
then . . . I wait. Firteen seconds, thirty seconds, TOO long. This has
been happening for a week or two. I scanned with Norton antivirus and
Ad-Aware from lavasoftusa.com but it did not help. Suggestions?
Thanks for listening.
Pete
PS Mozilla loads pages okay. Yea, I know.

You can do a repair,
http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/repair_xp.htm
That should fix the browser and or try the latest version of
Opera.It's better than ever IMHO,

All windows versions can get clogged down over time if the user
doesn't do some,"Good Housekeeping",

Clear all temp folders and caches.
If you use OE compact the data bases.
File/Folders/Compact them all.
Clean the registry.
Take control of the start up,

http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_pages/startup_full.htm
http://www.3feetunder.com/krick/startup/list.html

There are also services in XP that are pretty useless like the file
indexing which can be turned off.See XPRegscrub/Misc for other tweaks
like a fast shutdown etc.
Make sure you have enough hard drive space for your Pagefile/s to
work.
Lots of help here,
http://www.winxpfix.com/
Also the free,"Cacheman",
http://www.geocities.com/sheppola/freeprog.html
Still has it's uses even in XP like turing on the conservative
swapfile/pagefile usage depending on how much RAM you have.

HTH :)
