Ok just to cut straight to the point (and for reasons of pure curiosity of
course) but will the latest beta of SP2 install on a pirated copy of XP?
I'd post on the MS NG's but ....

Supposedly not if it recognizes many of the known pirated keys. But I don't
have any pirated copies to try to install it on!

Will SP1 install on it? If so, it seems likely that SP2 will also since
there is only so much that MS's coders can do to detect pirated copies.

They have announced that they are targeting particular S/N's in SP2

Do you have a source for this?

Last time I read up on SP2 they said they wouldn't be doing this as
they'd prefer everyone to have protected PC's rather than thousands of
vulnerable drones (pirated XP or not).

Interesting, a definite change of tune from a month or so ago:

IMHO, that's a bad news for the computer community. I'd imagine that
the majority of users out there running pirated versions of Windows are
blissfully unaware of the fact. Sure that's no excuse and shouldn't
entitle them to any kind of support, but when you're talking fixes that
would benefit the Internet as a whole, MS should allow these systems to
be patched. If they don't, legitimate Windows users (and users with
other OS's) will suffer as well with those unpatched systems out there.

I want to know if SP2 will deactivate a copy of Windows XP
Professional that has had "WPA_Kill.exe" applied to it to get rid
of Product Activation.

If you are using one of the corporate keys, then yes it works just fine.
