I'm showing 3.1 (KB893803) in add/remove - looking to see if this is
3.1(v2) I'm looking for the path to the file with the version # And if i
don't
have the latest Windows Installer do i remove this version before installing
(v2) or will the new download take care of the previous version? Can't make
heads or tails from this page.

If you are up to date with an express scan at Windows Update, I wouldn't
worry about it.

(but, see below and let me know how this comes out?)

However:

To determine which version of Windows Installer is currently installed on
the computer, follow these steps: 1. In Windows Explorer, locate the
following file:
Msi.dll
This file is located in the Windows\System 32 folder.
2. Right-click Msi.dll, and then click Properties.
3. Click the Version tab. Note the file version number. . If the
version number is 3.1.4000.1823, the computer has Windows Installer 3.1 (v1)
installed.
. If the version number is 3.1.4000.2435, the computer has
Windows Installer 3.1 (v2) installed.

Perfect Bill, and thanks also i think i have a later version then what you
posted
3.1.4000.4039. Would you say i'm up-to-date.

I'd say that you got the same result I did on my home machine:

3.1.4000.4039

I suspect that is current, but I haven't looked at any others to check.

FYI

Vista

msiexec 70 KB
File version 4.0.6000.16386

msi.dll 1.99 MB

Whoops - hit the wrong button.

I was going to add that I looked at a machine running Windows Home Server,
but not the released version. This is based on Windows Server 2003. That
one read:

3.1.4000.4042

As did an SBS-2003 server that I checked.

A Vista Ultimate machine reads:

4.0.6000.16386

So--there's my survey for the day!
