OT: windows ADD / Remove programs too slow

Annie

hello guys,

there is some wiered problem with my windows xp pro system for the last
couple of days.
The add / remove option of control panel is getting very slow to populate
the list its about 10 - 15 mins

I have no idea what is going on? it was very normal before just couple of
seconds to open up the list
Also, another porblem that i have realised is that suddenly 1 or 2 program
set up is fired automatically
without I touch it and it shows Windows is trying to set up program xxxx and
it continues until i press cancel
then it pops up after another min or so.

I have checked my pc with Avast anti virus, Ad-aware, and spybot but nothing
serious is found ... still these
weired things happening.

Has anyone ever had such a issue? What can go wrong here?
Any suggestion please?

many thanks

As tf76 writes, you need to provide some info on what programs are
starting at boot up time. From there one can track them down to see
what's happening. Googling the program names can provide some help.
There are a number of other tools available too including Sysinternals
'process explorer' and 'autoruns' etc.

At the moment we know nothing except that you've slowed down.

I can highly recommend Safarp as a very fast uninstaller. Also, use
CCleaner to clean out your Temp and Temporary Internet files with
every boot. They can slow startup noticably and a lot of, er, crap,
resides in those folders and causes weird things to happen.

However, your main concern is programs trying to in/re-install
themselves. Use Mike Lin's Startup Control to see what is set to start
every startup and try disabling any that look suspicious. You can
easily re-enable them if that doesn't help.

i think i sassed out what the problem is however still i can't resove it!!!
i have 2 HDs but i just realised the the 2nd HD (non primary) one of the
partition is dead
when i move to it windows compains that the the partition is not formated.
I have installed half of my software into that partition as my primary c
drive was getting
smaller in size

now the problem is since some of the the programs are installed into that
partition when
i try to open the Start menu it gets to slow and even hungs as that
partition is not available

how can i revive that partition? I used partition magic it still can
recoginze it but when trying
to check for errors it gives CRC error ... ;-((

any help
