Maybe someone here can briefly answer my question or point me elsewhere in
the right direction.

A friend is contemplating one of those web hosting services that let you
design a website using their templates and you can register your domain
name through them.

I went to one sample site. It was designed with frames but otherwise I
didn't see anything unusual about the coding -- no calls for popups that I
could see. What are the pros and cons of these services?

I would never register a domain at a hosting company. Some hosting
companies put up a real fight if you try to move your site to another
company. Register the domain through namecheap.com or godaddy.com. I'm
sure others here can suggest some registrars. I use namecheap.com and I've
never had any problems with them.
 
1. If you know coding but don't know how to design is will help you.
2. Don't want to west you time on designing?? Buy template.
3. This what you see what you get.
4. You can modify anything you want.
5. Might not get what you want.
6. They might not have any coding or thing like pup ups. Most
templates are based on pure design.
8. If you decide to register your domain form them always as " what
will happen if you decided to change your host".
