I have a strange problem: I am prett sure I have a virus, as there is a
strange startup entry for EQSS.EXE in all users/start menu/startup folder,
but no Antivirus (I tried Norton, Antivir PE and a web based Homecall
scanner) detect it as a virus. I unchecked it in Msconfig to remove it from
startup, and it was back after reboot, so I am pretty sure it is a virus.
How do I remove it?

Post such questions to alt.comp.virus and identify which version of
Windows.

Upload the file for av scanning by KAV:

http://www.kaspersky.com/remoteviruschk.html

Also, run both Spybot and AdAware.

The anwser to your specific question, if you do actually have a
malware infestation, is to search out your startup axis including the
registry .... and remove the item from there. You can use something
like KAV's Trojan_Finder to help you in this regard. See my web site.

Try the newsgroup alt.comp.virus, or if you're brave, alt.comp.virus.source.code.

F-Prot for DOS might be a solution.

1. Try locating the file on your hard drive in Explorer, then right
click on it and select "Properties". You might be able to identify it
that way.

2. Look at the date of the file and search for all other files on your
hard drive that have the same date. This might give you a tip about
which program installed the file if this was the case (it being
legitimate.)

I searched for that file name using several search engines and could
find nothing. If my suggestions don't help you, then as others have
advised your best bet is to post to alt.comp.virus.

Note that I can't see any of Andy Mabbett's posts because I have him
killfiled. This is due what I perceive to be ongoing troll activity on
his part in this group.

I did a quick check on Google. I didn't find much information about it;
however, it does appear to have something to do with Everquest.

You can send a copy of the file to PCFLANK and they will let you know by
e-mail whether or not it is a virus.
