Haven't tried it. It is something that could be of use
though. We currently have 1 machine that we do all of our
testing on, but we just use ghost to create images of the
OSs. This may be a better way as we always have a clean OS
to test on.

With Virtual PC, you can always have a clean OS. You don't have to save
changes to the environment when your session is complete.

I've got VPC at home and VMWare at work. I haven't had a chance to use
either yet, but I plan on doing so shortly. It's the only way to test on
earlier versions of IE since you can't run multiple versions.

I know of plenty of Windows developers (non-web) who use these types of
solutions for testbeds. I used to use the same method that Mike suggested
(we used DriveImage, same idea) and that works well. But you do have to
wait for the image to load onto the drive. It's probably not a long time
with newer computers, but with VPC or VMWare, you can instantly load the OS.
If there's a trial available, I'd say give it a go.

I used it when it was a Connectix product prior to Microsoft's purchasing
it. It is an excellent product. In many ways, it's better than VMWare.

One really nice thing about VPC is that you can tell it to restore the OS on
each restart so that if you want to test something that you know is going to
hose the OS, when you restart the VPC, it reverts to the OS at its original
install state. Very convenient in some instances.

I used it when it was owned by the company Microsoft got it from, it's not a new product by any means and wasn't designed by
Microsoft.

I knew that.
;-)

It was created by Connectix.
There's another version out there made
by VMWare. Much more powerful.

I've used both pretty extensively. I prefer VPC to VMWare.

Briefly, why?

Can either or both be used to test USB devices in several operating systems?
From time to time I test USB fingerprint readers, smart card readers, facial
recognition cameras, etc. Naturally they're all for security and get in and
muck with the GINAs etc. Oftentimes they're hard to uninstall -- one
product took an FDISK and OS reinstall to completely get rid of. :-(

Suppose my PC is running WinXP Pro. Can I use VPC and/or VMWare to run a
brand-new copy of, say, Win2000 Pro, plug in a USB fingerprint reader,
install all the drivers and security junk in the VPC/VMWare session of
Win2000, and leave my base WinXP machine untouched? I spent time at
VMWare's web site reading about their products but didn't find this
specifically addressed.

Thanks.
