Hi all. I know this is OT. If completely bloogy, perhaps you could point me
to a more appropriate NG?
I have to swap power supplies. My current system keeps suddenly dying, and I
believe it is a faulty (250w) PS. I have an older system laying around with
a 400w PS, which I would like to put in the newer system. Is this an easy
thing to do? Are all supplies more or les the same? I have done some basic
things in my PC, like change RAM, add HDs and optical drives, wire in fans,
and such. Would swapping the PS would much harder, or an easy change?
Any hint would be appreciated.
Many thanks!

Thanks for the referral. However, I was kinda hoping to get some insight
before spending $40.
Thanks, tho...

Intel and AMD have specifications for power supplies. These
include the number and type of connectors and the quality of
the power output and stability. There is more to a power
supply than the wattage rating. But if the older 400 watt
PS is new enough to meet the specifications (P4 V12, etc)
then it will probably be the same physical size and be a
simple swap. But if it does not have the required
connectors, you would have the find adapters and be sure
that it meets all the current requirements.
Google for info on "power supplies atx" and this one of the
hits

weights of 38 standard ATX power supplies of different

There are usually 4 screws that go through the case into the supply
so if you take those out and tip the case sideways the supply will
fall out on the work table

There are 2 to ?? power cables that are used for the motherboard
and all the components... unhook and pick the power supply up
from the work table and throw in the trash

Do the reverse to install a new powersupply

The book listed on Amazon (also check your local library) has
PICTURES to show what goes where
