I've found a program called StartMonitor.exe in my Windows\System32 folder.
Is it part of Mr Tech Systray, which I installed recently? Or is it an
unwelcome intruder?

Do you have McAfee? It could be part of that. Otherwise, it could be part
of any number of programs. Do you have a program called PEEK? It lets you
look inside a program and see what's hidden in it's bowels. If you can't
find that or if you're a bit squeamish about looking inside files you can
send me just the EXE and I'll take a look and let you know what I find.
First, you might try right-clicking and checking properties to see if you
can find any identifiable info from there. If you decide to send the exe to
me send it to (e-mail address removed) .

Thanks, Ceg -- mystery solved. In my advancing old age I had forgotten that
I'd installed it a while back. Below are the details of this little app;
the comments are from a members-only freeware site I belong to.

Name: Start Up Monitor v1.02 -- Win98/ME/XP
Referer: http://www.mlin.net/StartupMonitor.shtml

Size: 59KB

Start Up Monitor is a small program which notifies you when any program
registers itself to run at system startup. It prevents useless tray
applications from registering themselves without permission, and acts as a
security tool against trojans like BackOrifice or Netbus. This utility is
awesome! It pops up a warning dialog box when any program tries to register
itself to load at Windows startup and gives you the option of accepting
that auto startup or denying it. Programs, like Winamp, which do not have
the courtesy to ask if you want them loaded at startup, can be blocked
without hassle. Start Up Monitor monitors tells you when a program is
placed in the Startup folder, or when it is inserted into the HKLM (all
users) or HKCU (current user) program "Run" sections of the Registry. More
importantly, it prevents trojans from silently loading themselves into the
Registry so they are executed every time that Windows starts. We were most
impressed with Start Up Monitor. It is a tool which every user should have
running in the background -- all of the time. It has a very small footprint
and uses only 208kB of system memory. Get it now! Note: this program is not
suitable for Windows 95.
