I saw the movie HUGO last night, and it was an absolutely delightful
film experience.
It's being hailed as a "masterpiece" and that kind of hype IMHO isn't
deserved, but it is a richly enjoyable entertainment, and I believe
people who frequent this NG would particularly appreciate it.
It is supposedly a kid's film, but no. Young children would be bored.
It is appropriate for them only because there is nothing really
offensive in the tale.
It actually is a film that speaks most pointedly to a mature audience -
the kind of folks who believe in doing things themselves, understanding
and commanding how things work, fixing things that are broken instead of
giving up on them, and - most of all - who are in love with
technological magic.
The boy protagonist that the movie is supposedly about is not the key
character. The key character is actually the old man played by Ben
Kingsley. This movie is a story about his redemption/reclamation, and
the boy plays a pivotal role.
Anyway, if you take an interest in how things work, fixing things, and
using technology to create magic, this is a terrific film for you. It's
a touching and beautifully imagined story, and everyone in the cast is
great.
You can see it in regular or 3D. I saw the 3D version, but you don't
need 3D effects to enjoy the movie.
