It's for a pal who want to run a 3 phase 3 Hp motor from a domestic
supply in the UK(240v).

To build a true 3phase converter would be a lot of work and money.
There are also commercially available units...which are of course expensive.

It may be possible to run a 3 phase motor on a single phase line
by connecting a large (at least 40mfd) motor-start capacitor to the third
motor lead and connecting it to one of the lines...but the motor will not
work
with full efficiency or HP.

He'd really be better off just getting a single phase motor

Anyone got a good site for plans to make the above including
circuit diagrams with component values?

www.epanorama.net should have links, and www.linear.com has very good
applications notes and publishes a switching supply circuit in their
ads in almost every other issue of Electronic Design
(www.elecdesign.com) and EDN (www.ednmag.com). If you're not familiar
with building switching supplies, try to get Linear's Linear
Applications Handbook, vols. I-III (contents available free online), a
compilation of their applications notes.
