I downloaded the CD ultimate boot disk from my ISP which has a time
limit, and the ISO is a hefty 30 meg or so down load, so I used Netants
to be sure it was resumable.

This computer is fairly new and untweaked, but my old one had netbooster
installed.

About halfway through I broke the D/L, and had the bright idea of
installing netbooster before resuming.

After finishing the D/L, I found the speed of the second half was exactly
the same as the first, ie 3k/second.

Netbooster had claimed to tweak my settings, and I have a 56k modem which
is never stretched by the local telephone lines, so, do these gadgets
work under any circumstances, or are they, (or this one) a complete waste
of time?

Any boffins got thoughts?

I don't claim to fall into that category, but IME tweaking Windows'
networking settings can have a marginal effect on DL speed. There a
are factors beyond your control which affect speed from any given site
at any given time, but in the long run you are slightly better off with
optimized settings.

Never used it, but the latest issue of Computer Shopper recommends
"Cablenut" at:

http://www.student.ipfw.edu/~gottjl01/

It seems to be pretty highly rated from what I saw. Going to give it a
try myself.

Note that I can't see any of Andy Mabbett's troll posts
because I have him killfiled.

Just tried it. Seems like pages actually took longer to start loading,
there was a *slight* increase in download speed however. The
differences were so slight that it might just be subjective. I took
the program off my system. Not worth the risk.

Thanks for the info, John, I'll have a look at the webpage.

Incidentally, Netants, for all it's five alleged little workers, does not
increase d/l speed at all, may even reduce it.

I only use it to make d/ls resumable and logged; and for the adenoidal
little voice that announces "job finished". (little things.....)
