Sorry for the off topic post but I didn't see a monitor newsgroup and also
figured there would be some monitor experts here :)

I just picked up a used HP LCD monitor that looks great except for sometimes
there is a solid red line running up through the display. If I hit the case
around the screen it will either go away or turn blue but it most cases it
does go away and it stays away unless I touch again or move it.

I'm curious as to what causes the line, and if it will cause more problems
later? I can ship the monitor back but to be honest I'm fine with it as long
as the line only shows up when hit or moved (after all it is used) and it
will cause no further problems later. Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Dude take it back for a replacement and STOP HITTING IT! The errant
lines could be signs of more serious problems down the line. Send it
back while the warranty's still good.
And, please, do your part to stop violence against LCDs. Together we can
can put an end to the madness.

There is a bad electrical contact between the panel and the column
driver circuit board. It is only likely to get worse. Probably the
reason why it was being sold used. Return the monitor.

Thanks guys (John and Servo).

The seller is sending me a replacement monitor. I wasn't going to fool with
it but it's getting harder to make it go away.
