I've been using Ahead Nero and liked it but it will not work on my new
machine. I've got 5.5.10.0 and it doesn't recognize my new drives and their
only solution is to pay to upgrade to 6.0. They already dicked me with their
limited Mp3 conversion utility- the one that requires and additional
purchase to make full featured, so I'm thinking if I got to change anyway,
why give them more money?
What else is good and full featured fresh off the platter?
I got Sony's "Record Now DX", "Power DVD5", and "My DVD" with my burner.
Anyone using this? Any good?

Just what IS your "new machine" and why won't Nero 5.5 work?

I wasn't very satisfied with any of Sonic's products and doubt they'd
even come close to the features offered in Nero 6.3. I recently
uninstalled RecordNow DX and MyDVD.

I have PowerDVD 4 which I feel is the best player on the market. Am
not familiar with version 5 but thought it was only a player too and
offered no recording options.

Have you tried.....

Or upgrade for free to 5.5.10.56

The only other all-round recording software you still hear about these
days is Alcohol 120%.

Then there's CloneCD (no longer available for legal reasons) and
CloneDVD.

"Just what IS your "new machine" and why won't Nero 5.5 work?"
I built a WinTel machine with P4C800-E base. I have a Plextor PX-Premium CD
Burner and a Sony DRU-510A DVD burner. When I load my old copy of Nero it
will not recognize either drive. In the "choose a recorder" window there is
only the Windows virtual recorder. I'm asked to run a test and send the
results to Ahead so they can update their recorder base for future releases.
I've been told that this is how it works, the software will only work with
the drives that were available at the time of release. I hate when that
happens and was throwing a hissy fit. But it's been a couple of days now and
I'm calm again. I think I still love Nero, but sometimes she just makes me
crazy.

Thanks for your 2 cents on the Sony stuff. Good to know. I don't want to
bother loading crap and then have to uninstall later anyway.

And thanks for the links. That will get me going in the right direction.

You can do that? Doh! My attention span on Java encrusted sites is about 20
seconds.
Ill go back and see where I missed that. 5.5.10.56 does support my recorders
if I recall correctly.
Thanks for the info.

I also have the Sony DRU-510A burner which WAS recognized by the 6.03
version of Nero.

I had real problems with Nero's InCD. Couldn't seem to get it
installed properly due to some form of DLA packet-writing software
existing on my system I just could not find. (I'd already deleted
RecordNow and Windows Media Player but the "ghost" DLA remained.)

I went through the tedious and voluminous process of sending all the
info Nero requested and waited the 3 days for their response. Like
your situation, the solution was to install the latest upgrade.

Thanks to Will Dormann, you got it fixed.

Stomp RecordNow Max 4.5 is good DVD recording software. Also try out
DVDdecrypter, it is completely free.

There's also the 5.5.10.54 update. Did you try that yet?

PowerDVD plays them. MyDVD I dunno, I haven't broken down and
purchased the blanks yet <B-)

Record Now DX - Well, I paid list for my first copy of Nero 6. And,
yes, I did have the MP3 Pro and MPEG2 (MPEG1?) plugins, also purchased.
That tell you what I think of Nero? <B-)

Thanks. Thought legal difficulties had driven them out of business. One of
the best programs for backup of game disks. Virtually automatic.
