I had posted this in alt.comp.freeware.discussion, got one response.

Need to do something soon, so am trying here.

As a secondary account, I need a free mail account, to send and receive
mail.

I want one with minimal ads/spam, no spyware.

Can I get some recommendations for one that has worked
out well?

I know.

The idea is to get a recommendation from someone that used one they are
happy with, not trial and error.

Well..... this free offering has been around awhile and it has been reliable
for me:

http://mail.adnmail.com/adn/login/login.asp

It's a freebie offered by an on-line newspaper.... that Anchorage (Alaska)
Daily News.

Considering the low population of that area and that the free offering isn't
advertised I expect the servers to never be overwhelmed!!!!!!!

Of course, YMMV.

Happy mailing!!!!!

Oh..... as a plus. You don't have to have active scripting enabled for the
site to work.... a plus in my book.

www.gawab.com -- free 15 MB mailbox, with both web and POP access.
No ads/spyware/etc. Comes with built-in spam filters, and you can
create filters to DELETE (not just "Send to trash") any unwanted
mail. So it's like Yahoo/Hotmail, only a million times better.

The "Guest" Acct. is free with 10MB storage. It really is fast! There
are many ingenious advanced features; no spying and no ads, but they
do put a tagline on your outgoing.

Here's what I see in their website for free account:
Advertising Gawab.com shares 50% of the Ads space with you
POP/SMTP Not Available- ??
Technical Support Not Available
awab Mail Shots Gawab.com has the right to advertise mail

This sounds like too much ads

I agree about active scripting for anything on the web.

That site has lots of general email reference data, but I see nothing
about a simple feature list for the free account.

What kind of ads do you see in your email?
Do they send you spam/their advertising?
Do they offer a normal POP3 account or Webmail?

Thanks to you and Chris for mentioning fastmail, but as I look into the
website:
It seems to be clear from what I read that there is no access for
POP/SMTP mail in the free Guest account.

True. For the free accounts at fastmail, you can access your mail with
an IMAP client but you have to use your own SMTP to send. However, I
prefer to use the fastmail webmail interface. It is the best I've
ever seen, and gives you access to many advanced features that are
available only through the web interface, such as checking mail in POP
accounts and sending from them, or bouncing mail. With webmail, of
course you are using their SMTP to send, and my word is it fast. If
all you want is POP/SMTP, then I think you will find softhome.net
fully satisfactory, but I do recommend trying a fastmail account to
see just how good free email service can be.

As I understand it, webmail means my email is stored in my mailbox on
their server, I assume I can review there, download from there, delete
on the server. Then to send, I go to the site, compose my message and
when it sends, a copy goes to my server mailbox. Does this sound right?

Softhome reads like a lot of spam to me.

I'm suspicious. You don't really get something for nothing.
Look here, on the same page:
"Webmaster .. Promote your site on every message sent.
Webmaster .. Boost traffic and user loyalty.
Webmaster .. Generate incremental advertising revenue. "

Sounds to me like they're getting set to add somebody's
advertisements to the ends of the posts. Just like:

Richard
Do You Yahoo?
Do You Really Yahoo?
Hey' we're so cool that we add our advertisements to all your
outgoing messages!
Oh, we're so cool, we are the essence of coolness; the ultimate
of cool.
So, do you want to Yahoo or not?
I mean, is this our message or yours?
Who is paying for this bandwith anyway? Are you?
Don't make me laugh: "Ha Ha."
There. So, we're going to screw around with your messages any way
that we feel like, And You Will Like It!
Good free email, huh?
