Greetings.

I was wondering if you remove IE, how do you go about updating windows?

I was able to d/l and install all patches and updates for Win 98 with
IE eradicated. Later, I found that M$ didn't allow that with Win ME so
I had to temporarily install IE6 for that purpose and then run
IEradicator again.

==> You can't unless M$ changes their policy and allows other browsers
to access the update page. BTW, if you use IEradicate *do not* under
any circumstances run a reg cleaner. It will delete critical files and
you won't be able to use OE.

Thanks for info, Phil.

I used IEradicator to removed IE from my Win98 system, and ran into the
same thing regaring Windows update.
So I haven't used M$'s update system.

Seem to recall somehtugn aboiut the critical files - what are they?
I may have done some reg cleaning, though I'm quite unsure about what to
"clean".

I don't have OE.

You should be able to d/l the critical patches from here without IE. I
did :
http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/downloads/corporate.asp

I did them selectively and individually.

I have Windows 98SE. Did you find an easy way to get at the updates?
I'd appreciate any tips.

I'd suggest to try using explorer.
Paste the url in the address bar.
Worth a shot.

I gave the url to the critical update patches already in this thread.
The link is also at my web site. You should have no problem
downloading them selectively and individually.

I've had a look at Art's site in response to the answers I got on

"browser; but not IE"

and it appears to go fine

I'd like to thank all the contributors to that thread, it'll take me a
while to work through your suggestions, but I have started, and hope to
eliminate IE and OE not so much because I hate them, but as possible steps
away from XP

I guess what I should have said, "easy" as in, "easy to know which
ones haven't been installed yet."

OK, I'll just keep an eye on the tech news as usual.

You say that like it's a *bad* thing. };O)

==> Actually, I think it is. M$ won't allow updating w/out their
browser. Imagine if there were no aftermarket car parts<G>

==> Well, if you don't have OE and , IIRC, don't care about HTML, then
go for it w/a reg cleaner. But YMMV

I was wondering if you remove IE, how do you go about updating windows?

I saved all the current updates to ME to hard disk so I can use them as
needed.

I have an old CD from my ISP with IE 5.01 on it. If I should read about a
critical update that I need, I'd reinstall it (it's faster and less bloated
than later versions of IE), download the update, then eradicate IE again.

This hasn't happened yet, and hopefully won't.
