only for a short time so no panic on heat

save a lot of time opening cases

thanks

Yes. For IDE you can use an external enclosure or a bare-back
adapter. They are out there and not hard to find.
For SATA you need to use an external enclosure. In both
cases there is no need to mount the drive inside the enclosure,
just cpnnect it to the electonics.

Aha. Nice.

But less useful than a USB->PATA adapter.
With SATA you can hotplug an external SATA drive directly on the
motherboard -- you just need a long SATA cable to let it get out of
the case. Faster and more reliable than the USB connection.

Yeah, you can. There are a lot of external and internal adapters for
this.

I recommend this one:

http://www.akasa.com.tw/akasa_english/spec_page/storage/spec_ak_enp2sata_bk.htm

Why? Because it supports both SATA and PATA, from the hard disk view.
And it offers a USB 2.0 (480 Mbit/s) and an E-SATA port (1.5 Gb/s).

Ok, your computer may not have an e-SATA port. But just like USB, this
kind of port should be common in next years...

Look: http://www.sata-io.org/esata.asp

Better make that an eSTAT cable. More rugged and has a higher
lenght limit. If you stay below 1m total a standaard SATA cable
works, but I am worried about the connectors.

Agreed. And you can read the disks SMART status and temperature
with SATA direct, while that is impossible over USB.

As in: the stupid bot was found babbling again, *as always*.

Long as in 1 meter max.

Whatever.

And won't fit, you stupid bot.

Same goes for the eSATA cable when the electronics are not eSATA.
eSATA cables are for eSATA Hostadapters and eSata cabinets.
but I am worried about the connectors.

*Currently* not possible over USB.
