The Microsoft Access Product Group (the people who build Microsoft Access)
want your help! One of the main things we're working on for the near future
is a conversion tool to take Microsoft Access 97 databases (primarily, but
also Microsoft Access 2000 or 2002/XP databases) up to Microsoft Office
Access 2003. For us to do this, we need sample databases from *you*, our
customers, to ensure a quality tool.

If you're willing to paricipate in helping us build a quality conversion
tool, please send your Microsoft Access 97, 2000, or 2002/XP database to
(e-mail address removed). When you submit a database, please keep in mind:

* You won't be receiving a copy of this database back.
* We will be using these databases for internal testing purposes *only*.

*** Please be sure to zip the database due to Outlook security. ***

In addition, these should be .mdb files and those databases in wide use and
production.

TIA.

I have Office 97 with an Access Database. Since I upgraded
to Windows XP from Windows 98, I have been unable to
install Office 97 due to a so-called memory error and a
problem with Windows XP handling 16 bit programs. I have
been considering upgrading to Office XP, but want to be
assured the tables, forms and VB code from the MS Access
97 database can be imported directly to Office XP without
a major rework. You have partially answered my question by
this news message; it appears Microsoft is still working
on it. What exactly will Access XP do respecting the
import of Access 97 databases? Thank you.

Hi Bill.

I'd suggest, next time, that you post a different message since you have a
specific conversion concern. However, I'll attempt to answer your
question...

You can *open* a Microsoft Access 97 database in Microsoft Access XP,
read-only. Only after converting the database from Microsoft Access 97 file
format to either 2000 or 2002/XP file format can you modify the database
(the file format for databases changed in Microsoft Access 2000, and you
can use either 2000 or 2002/XP file format in Microsoft Access 2002/XP).
After converting the database to one of the supported file formats in
Microsoft Access 2002/XP, you should be fine opening/modifying *any*
Microsoft Access object: tables, forms, reports, queries... When in doubt,
you could certainly convert Northwind (from Microsoft Access 97) to
Microsoft Access 2002/XP.

You really should be able to install Microsoft Access/Office 97 on Windows
XP (I know I've done so many times). It would be more helpful to provide
the *exact* error message you're seeing, especially since you're running
into a particular problem.

Sincerely,
