I had to reinstall my boot drive from scratch, (hold on while I look at the
label of my boot drive which I always date...), ....oh silly me, that's went
as well ! ....well it was roughly two years ago.
....and all because of a "TRUST GB445A" adsl/modem/router that was next to
impossible to install ! ...why did I want a modem/router ? ...I can't
remember now ! ....I've been been so ******* (the ******* is optional),
long knocking everything back into shape I've forgotten.... A WHOLE DAY !!!!
....nearly TWO !!!
....and when I located my OE structure / Message Store and address book *.wab
on drive I:\ on my 2nd, (gooOOrgeous...luvly, darling, kiss, kiss, cuddle,
cuddle), hard-disk, ......I'd forgotten how to put it all back. A quick
re-read of
http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/backup/clone.htm reminded me about the 4
registry keys....
and I was on my way to restoring my OE message store and address book. I
was a little alarmed when there was no wab key to delete in registry, and
there was no key for "Internet Account manager," that threw me for a few
seconds, then I realised that I hadn't used OE since reinstallation of XP
Home ed. SP2.
My TWO COPIES of, (specially prepared for such an event), "SP2 slipstream XP
Home ed." WOULDN'T WORK ***, I suspect because I didn't zero-fill drive 0
(zero) ....well I couldn't, as there was data on its' drives d,e and f ,
and XP is definately doing some SERIOUS SNIFFING and "playing up" *** on a
drive where it's already been installed, across the past few years I've
repeatedly found that the ONLY way to install XP Home ed. without massively
TIME CONSUMING problems, (on a hd where it's previously lived for a while),
is to ZERO-FILL the damned thing first.
*** the range of errors and hiccups was laughable !!! ...and before it's
suggested, I have used my slipstream cd-r's to re-install before and they
performed without a hiccup, noteably on a freshly zero-filled drive each
time. ......perhaps cd-r's start to rot after a year or more in storage !
I could have restored a Norton Ghost Image but, I suspected that it
contained the "condition or XP settings" that were preventing a router from
working on my system, that I couldn't find <blush>, ...so I resolved to
reinstall from scratch !! It was fun, FRUSTRATING,.....very time consuming
but, I loved all of it !
....funny thing is I keep finding things that weren't as they were before,
it'll probably take a year and a half to get the thing back to how I like
it, and then it'll need reinstalling again !!
regards, Richard
###....modern day home computing consists of LOTS and LOTS of rebooting,
....during which you get lots and lots of time to make cups of coffee. And
the thing that was tkaing an EEEEEEEEEEEEETERNITY to finish, finishes in
about 30 seconds FLAT, after you've left the room to make a cup of coffee.
